Unusual instrumentation means that certain works rarely appear on concert programs, but thanks to harpist Erik Groenstein-Hendriks guesting with Camerata Nordica Chamber Ensemble, we are now able to present a string of exciting pieces in a program built around his instrument—the harp.

The harp’s central role in Maurice Ravel’s iconic Introduction and Allegro has inspired a repertoire that also includes flute and clarinet, featuring works of special historical significance and with a uniquely natural place in the chamber music repertoire.

Mozart’s characteristically light and elegant Flute Quartet No. 1 from 1778 opens the concert. This is followed by Caplet’s programmatic music inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s short story The Masque of the Red Death, Crusell’s lyrically playful Second Clarinet Quartet, and Françaix’s charming Quintet for String Trio and Harp, before the concert concludes with Ravel’s work, where the harp is given the opportunity to showcase its dynamic range.
